            General:  From the author's Introduction:

This collection of stories gives the reader one impressionable kid's memories of what life was like in the 1930s and 1940s.  The stories attempt to describe an era in urban America that no longer exists; in many ways they are about as relevant to today's hectic existence as an insect trapped in amber.

We grew up in a simpler, less complicated period, when the milkman came toour house to drop off our daily order; when farmers with horse-drawn carts drove down our street peddling fruis and vegetables, and when kids dashed to the back of the ice man's truck to reach under the canvas trying to find chips of ice while he was making his delivery.
